Grading

In Kendo, grading is not shown by any external symbol. Prior to achieving a Dan or black belt, there are five categories that run from highest to lowest: from 1st to 5th Kyu. While 5th Kyu is the absolute novice practitioner, in time and based on dedication and skills, the kendoka will evolve towards 1st Kyu. This is the last step before acquiring a 1st Dan or black belt. With the proper attitude and effort, 1st Dan can be reached in a year. Regarding Dan, to date 10 levels have existed. Nowadays the ZNKR (Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei or Japanese Kendo Federation) has eliminated the 10th Dan level and is in the process of eliminating 9th Dan. The terms and juries required to achieve each level are controlled by international regulations.
